Manitou
Springs

Small, arty, attractive, Manitou
Springs, Colorado
Colorado Springs was
our general direction when heading south from Denver. But
nearby Manitou Springs looked more interesting.
An arty town, Manitou Springs
sports numerous artists in the community, governed by the
Manitou Springs Arts Council. The town is a small sleepy suburb
of Colorado Springs, rather than the larger neighbour's more
faceless city.
So the choice for me was: Manitou
Springs rather than Colorado Springs.
Heading south towards the Springs
from Denver we were clearly going to be nestling into the Rocky
Mountains much more than previously. We would be in the lee of
the mountain rather than them being on the horizon, as in
Denver.
The road took us nearer and
nearer the lush peaks, and the feeling from them towering above
us was comfortable yet awe-inspiring.
History of Manitou
Springs
The word 'Manitou' means 'spirit'
in Native American. The whole area was considered sacred by the
Ute and Cheyenne tribes and others.
In geographical terms, Manitou
Sprigs is located between two well known beauty spots: Pike's
peak – the highest peak in the area – and and Garden of the
Gods – a national park punctuated by huge, impressive chunks of
rock.
If you like great views – and you
have a head for heights - you can take the famous Cog Railway
up to the top of Pike's peak – at 11,000 feet. But be sure to
plan to acclimatize at lower levels – eg in Denver (5000 feet)
for few days first to avoid risk of altitude sickness.
Manitou Springs High Street
Nearing Manitous Springs my
feeling was strong that my choice to stay here was a good one.
Then, to confirm that, we entered a sweet, narrow, two lane
main street. It had zebra crossings – with pedestrians having
right of way, for goodness sake! A taste of being home in the
UK.
The delightful high
street of Manitou Springs has great character. Yes, there
are one or two tacky tourist shops, but mainly much more
interesting fare.
A glass blowing shop full of
lovely pieces. You could have your name blown in glass; sounds
a bit tacky but presented very nicely.
A musical instrument shop - where
the instruments were actually being made. Partially made string
instruments were in the window and on benches.
Several shops showcasing works of
art. One is full of pieces by members of a well established
local collective. Delightful.
The 'Springs' of the
name refer to the local mineral Springs. There are a dozen
locations in the town where the springs flow out. The
water is drinkable. It is the only source of naturally
occurring carbonated spring water I the USA.
Summary
All in all, Manitou Springs is a
delightful place to visit. There are a number of interesting
places to visit – outside and inside. The town itself is
delightful, and you can easily stay within walking distance of
it. And if you want a big town for anything – Colorado Springs
is a short car journey.
